Feature: Ars at the Tokyo Game Show: the best titles from a world away

Every September, Japanese videogame hardware and software manufacturers convene at Makuhari Messe Convention Center to show off their latest and greatest products at the Tokyo Game Show. It's the biggest videogame event in Japan, it's open to the public, and this year Ars was on hand to get a feel for this incredible event.

The show opens with two business days which are closed to the public. Traditionally taking place on a Thursday and then a Friday, these two days are similar to the E3 show in the US, only allowing industry insiders, media, and resellers in to view and talk about the newest games and products.

Court Gives Righthaven A Little More Time To Pay Attorneys Fees

As Righthaven is desperately trying to avoid paying legal fees to Marc Randazza in the Hoehn case, it appears that the company has caught a very slight and brief reprieve. Judge Philip Pro has given the company a little bit more time, saying that Righthaven doesn't need to pay attorneys fees while the case is on appeal -- but it must post a bond to show that it can pay the $34k within 30 days. The judge then rejected the attempt to have Righthaven declared in contempt, and to allow the US Marshals to seize Righthaven assets. That's pretty understandable, given the appeal. Requiring Righthaven to post bond seems quite reasonable, even though I'm sure Righthaven will try to get out of it. Judge Pro also made it easier for Righthaven to post bond by saying that it only had to post bond on the $34k, rather than a much larger sum, including additional legal fees for the appeals process. This basically gives Righthaven a very, very brief respite, but isn't going to help. Even the judge makes it clear that Righthaven "does not enjoy a reasonable probability of success on the merits of its appeal."

The9 Launches Mobile Gaming Platform & SDK To Give Developers Access To The Chinese Market

39137_The9LOGO9_bThe9, the sizable NASDAQ-listed Chinese game publisher and developer, has made quite a few investments in the U.S. gaming market over the last year. (Reflecting, it seems, a rising Asian interest in U.S. companies, especially gaming.) As part of its international strategy, The9 has been full-steam ahead on creating better ways for international gaming companies and developers to make inroads into the Chinese mobile and social gaming markets, which have been traditionally difficult areas for non-Chinese developers to access effectively (and profitably).

AT&T Wants Their Competitors? Antitrust Suits Dismissed

attmoBy now, we all know that the US Department of Justice filed an antitrust suit to block the AT&T/T-Mobile merger. Sprint and C Spire Wireless (formerly known as the Cellular South) have filed suits to that same effect, but AT&T has asked the court to reject those companies' complaints. The reason? AT&T believes that Sprint and C Spire are fighting for their own sakes, and not for the public's best interests.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

LG seeks ban on South Korean BMW and Audi sales, sticks out its LED lit tongue at Osram

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where we all just got along, people worked for the thrill of it, and knowledge was free? Yeah, fat chance dreamers. 'Sue', our new millennium's most oft-used verb, is getting some heavy play at the hands of the tech industry. The latest court room combatants? Why, that'd be LG Group and Osram. You see, once upon a time LG was late to the LED patent game, and was content to fork over the cash to Osram for use of its tech. Skip to now, and the electronics giant's claiming it can get its lighting goods elsewhere, picking from a plethora of relevant IP-holding companies and combining that with its own patents. Despite having already countersued Osram in July to prevent the import of that company's allegedly infringing products into South Korea, LG's gathered its legal arsenal once again to block the sale of Audis and BMWs throughout the entire country -- cars that include Osram's LED tech. It's hard to imagine the courts would grant such a wide-sweeping ban on major auto players' bread-and-butter. And all grandstanding aside, it's more likely the two fisticuffing parties will come to some sort of revised financial agreement.

India caps text messages to curb telemarketing, Desi teens plot mutiny

SMS-based telemarketing is a serious problem in India -- so serious, in fact, that the government has decided to crack down in a pretty severe way. As of this week, every Indian mobile user or company is allowed to send only 100 text messages per day, as part of a new anti-spam initiative from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The move is just the latest in a series of campaigns to combat a boom in aggressive telemarketing that, according to some, borders on harassment. Authorities say spam phone calls have already declined significantly since 2007, when the government instituted a national "do not call" registry, yet the problem persists, with many users complaining of receiving commercial texts during the wee hours of the night. Regulators seem confident that these new rules will go a long way toward solving this riddle, though some have been left wondering why India's millions of mobile subscribers should pay the price, rather than the spammers themselves. The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, is reporting that subcontinental telemarketers have already begun circumventing the new regulations by re-focusing their efforts on junk mail, ad-based Twitter feeds and other ways to be just as annoying as they ever were.
