MacBook Air stock dwindles at online retailers, hinting at refresh

Best Buy has stopped taking orders for MacBook Airs from customers, adding more evidence that a refresh is on the horizon. The company began listing the current-generation MacBook Airs as "Not Available for Shipping" on its website over the weekend, though it's still selling the notebooks in its brick-and-mortar stores.

Rumors about an updated MacBook Air have begun accelerating in the last couple weeks, all of which point to a July refresh. First, it was said that Apple was holding back on a Sandy Bridge-updated MacBook Air until Mac OS X Lion ships next month. Then a new report out of Apple's supply chain claimed that Apple is planning a MacBook Air production increase in July, with even bigger increases towards the end of the year.

With July just around the corner, it certainly seems that the stars are aligning. As noted by 9 to 5 Mac and TUAW, it's not just Best Buy that isn't shipping Airs to people anymore either—Amazon is apparently low on stock on the current-gen machines too, as are MacMall and PC Connection. We don't anticipate Lion's release until at least the middle of the month, so it may be a couple of weeks until new Mac Book Airs are available.
