Sony VAIO Z review (2011)

We see countless laptops come and go through the seasons, but a rare few have built up something of a following. Make no mistake: the Sony VAIO Z, a skinny ultraportable brimming with cutting-edge technology and powerful innards, is that kind of gem. So when it disappeared from Sony's online store earlier this year, more than a few techies took note. After all, the Z is part of a small fraternity of notebooks that combine an impossibly lightweight design with performance worthy of a larger system. People who missed out on the last-gen Z wondered when they'd next get the chance to buy, while some lucky folks out there with thousands to burn started itching for something thinner, something lighter, something... better.

Well, it's here. The 2011 VAIO Z is, indeed, thinner, lighter, and more powerful. It also might not be the Z you were expecting. Whereas the last generation combined it all, cramming in an optical drive and switchable graphics, this year's model leaves much of that at the door -- or, at least, in an external dock that ships with the laptop. This time around, the Z has no optical drive, and packs just an integrated Intel graphics card on board. (Don't worry, it does squeeze in lots of other goodies, including standard-voltage Sandy Bridge processors and expanded solid-state storage.) If you want that Blu-ray burner or the stock AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics card, you'll have to plug into the Power Media Dock, an external peripheral that uses Intel's Light Peak technology.

That's quite the gamble Sony is taking -- after all, the company is essentially betting that you won't need to do anything too intensive while you're on the go. On the one hand, this inventive design is sure to intrigue the Z's usual early adopter fanbase. But will it satisfy those who always liked the Z because of its no-compromise design? And then there's the issue of that $1,969 starting price, a likely stumbling block for people trying to decide between this and an equally thin, less expensive ultraportable. What's a well-heeled geek to do? Let's find out.

MOVIE REVIEW Conversing with the stars

STAFF WRITER
Midnight in Paris is Woody Allen?s most recent film. Like many of Allen?s past films, Midnight in Paris tends towards the more philosophical and the atmospheric. The film heavily references many influential figures in literature and draws a contrast between a modern-day man unhappy with his current life and the romantic atmosphere of Paris in the Roaring Twenties.

NEWS ANALYSIS Dorm transfers review

Next semester marks the first year of MIT?s new undergraduate dining plan, requiring students who live in Simmons, McCormick, Baker, Next, and Maseeh Hall to purchase meal plans ranging from $2,500?$4,500 per year. Opponents to the plan have suggested that the cost may be prohibitive for some, driving students away from dorms where they otherwise would have liked to live. Here we present a breakdown of requests for transfers to and from every dorm from 2008?2011. Data from prior to 2008 is not available, nor do we yet know how dining plans will affect how freshmen pick dorms. However, with these data we can begin to ask whether dining changes significantly impacted dorm popularity.

Leaf acts as an echo beacon to lure bat pollinators

As a Pallas’s long-tongued bat flies around a rainforest looking for nectar, it relies on echolocation from the sound it emits to find flowers. From a plant’s perspective, it's good to be found by bats, which are highly mobile pollinators. But how can a plant stand out among the sea of foliage in a rainforest?

A recent paper in Science reveals that the vine Marcgravia evenia from the Cuban rainforest has evolved to catch a bat's attention by producing one to two dish-shaped leaves near its flowers. These dish-shaped leaves stand upright and point the concave side toward nectar-feeding pollinators. The dimensions of the leaves make them an acoustic beacon for bats.

Scientists find fossil of ancient sea monster

An extreme low tide along the shore of the Tongass National Forest in May revealed the tail of a thalattosaur fossil, a long-tailed sea creature that plied warm, shallow waters in the early days of dinosaurs and became extinct at the end of the Triassic period about 200 million years ago. Alaska scientists have discovered the fossil of a rare, prehistoric marine reptile that is likely the most complete remnant of the creature ever found in North America.

Improved Lion compatibility coming to Office, but not for a few months

Microsoft's iconic productivity suite Office for Mac will gain support for new Lion features, including auto save and fullscreen mode, in an upcoming update. But don't get excited just yet, as those features won't be available for the next few months.

As we noted in our visual look at Lion, the main Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 applications—Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—ran for us as expected. Files opened without issue, and we experienced no obvious bugs in functionality. Most of the suite works fine under Lion and doesn't necessarily need anything to continue functioning as usual.

However, Microsoft's Pat Fox noted last week that Communicator, a corporate-only version of Windows Live Messenger, had a serious crashing bug. That bug is being addressed by a fix being pushed out in the next day or so, according to Fox, so corporate users should be back to messaging in no time.

The other major bug is that Outlook 2011 can't import e-mail from Lion's version of Mail. If you are installing Office 2011 new, you won't be able to use the import function. If you have already been using Outlook, though, this won't be an issue. Beyond those two bugs, Fox noted that there are some little nagging issues like windows that don't align as they did under Snow Leopard.

On Thursday of this week, Fox further explained that a future update for Office 2011 will also add support for new Lion features. That includes Lion's new file management features including auto save and versions, as well as window management like fullscreen mode and auto resume. Unfortunately, adding support will be "measured in months not days—just to set expectations."

Such a wait may be vexing for users who are becoming used to such features in Lion, especially given that developers have had access to the OS for several months. Still, large applications like Office take quite a bit of time and effort to add new features, not the least of which because Office uses gobs of custom UI code that must be tested to prevent regressions.

Smaller bugs will be addressed by regular updates, and Office 2008 will also benefit from such fixes. However, Office 2004 is dead in the water—it's a PowerPC app and Lion doesn't offer Rosetta compatibility.

Microsoft Office 2011 SP1 for Mac arriving next week with Outlook improvements

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac SP1
Microsoft's Business Unit, the Mac software arm of the Redmond-based software giant, is set to release its first Service Pack for Office 2011 for Mac. Just like most updates of this nature, SP1 will address a myriad of bugs, and roll in most of the hotfixes that came before it into one, easy to install package.

SP1 will also address Outlook's syncing support, with the BU adding calendar support for Sync Services allowing you to finally sync Outlook calendars with iCal and other local calendars, as well as syncing iDevices hooked up through iTunes. For Office 2008 upgraders, this was one of the features removed in the Entourage to Outlook switch, so it's nice to see it finally make an appearance in Outlook. The irony here is that Outlook will no longer be able to sync with your MobileMe calendar when it's upgraded to the new version on the 5th of May, or before if you've jumped the gun early, as Apple has removed Sync Services support from MobileMe by turning to CalDAV. Nothing to do with Microsoft here of course, and it shouldn't be long before something gets worked out.

Outlook has also been bestowed with the ability to edit server-side Exchange rules, something our friends at TUAW pointed out, have been missing on the Mac since Office 2001 for Mac OS 9. The email Redirect and Resend buttons have also made an appearance, allowing you to send mail onto the intended recipient without being caught in the email chain for replies. Excel also gets some love from SP1 with improved Solver integration support, which should be handy for those attempting to use equations in Excel.

Look to Microsoft Autoupdate on your Mac starting next week, or visit the Microsoft Mac download center to update manually once it becomes available.

Advanced Reactor Gets Closer to Reality

Terrapower is pushing ahead with a reactor design that uses a nearly inexhaustible fuel source.

Terrapower, a startup funded in part by Nathan Myhrvold and Bill Gates, is moving closer to building a new type of nuclear reactor called a traveling wave reactor that runs on an abundant form of uranium. The company sees it as a possible alternative to fusion reactors, which are also valued for their potential to produce power from a nearly inexhaustible source of fuel.

ASUS Eee PC X101 product page goes live, still no release date

ASUS has gone and made its super svelte Eee PC X101 official with a dedicated product page live on its site. We'd already gotten our hands-on with the crimson-colored ultraportable, but now there's a whole list of specs to flesh out this 920g wonder. The MeeGo-running netbook's rocking a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display, 1.33 GHz Intel Atom N435 (or N455) processor, 8GB SSD, Bluetooth, WiFi, SDHC card support and USB 2.0. Oh, and did we mention this 17.6 millimeter thin beauty comes in three shades of awesome? That's right, when this $199 netbook finally hits retailers' shelves, you can also snag it in white and brown (a Zune homage, we presume). There's still no word on just when this slight badboy's going to be available, but at least you now have a place to go and drool in anticipation.
