Just like Twitter and Facebook, the Google+ stream suffers from the overwhelming problem of too many updates in too less time. I wrote about a few ways to tackle this problem like muting users and changing the default stream to a user or circle. G+me for Google Plus is a new Chrome extension that offers the best solution possible ? automatically collapsing messages and comments.
After installation, you will notice a thin bar above all messages in your Google Plus stream and a vertical bar against comments. This bar is used to collapse the message and comments the message attracted with a single click. Collapsing a message reduces it to a single row displaying an excerpt of the message. The number of comments is shown by a red counter. If all the comments has been seen, the counter fades into gray. This is G+me?s default ?expanded mode?.
When you switch to the ?list mode?, all messages in the stream are automatically collapsed with only the top message shown expanded. In this state, your Google+ stream almost begins to look like your Gmail inbox. When in list mode, mousing over a collapsed post displays an instant preview of the message in a pop-up window. You can actually read your entire stream without clicking on a single post.
Collapsing messages without muting offers another big advantage. When you mute post you will never see it again and you stop getting any notifications of responses to any comments you may have made on that post. Collapsing messages, on the other hand, allows you to get back to it at a later time.
G+me for Google Plus also adds a notification badge to the toolbar that alerts you of new notification even when Google Plus is not open in your browser.
